All being well I’ll have an R-Pi sometime within the next two weeks, so I ought to start getting the required odds & sods together so that I can fire it up when the time comes. I’ll need:

  • USB keyboard
  • USB mouse
  • Case?
  • SD card with OS
  • HDMI (or composite) television
  • HDMI cable
  • Micro USB power supply
  • Ethernet LAN cable (optional, but probably)

Keyboard & mouses sorted, monitor & cable sorted, I’m sure I can find a micro USB cable in one of the boxes that @debsautomatic keeps telling me to sort out and there’s plenty of ways into the lan before going wireless. So that leaves a case and an OS.

For the case I’m intending to repurpose Pete & Rob to give it that ‘just being nicked’ look, so it’s just an SD card with an OS.

I’m off to the downloads department to sort the software, and I’ll spend some time opening old cameras to see what SD goodness they’re hiding.

More later …

I couldn’t afford to buy this when it came out, but thanks to Selectadisc‘s early eighties policy of opening until the pubs chucked out such concerns were over-ridden by alcohol-induced optimism. When I got it home in the early hours I put it on the deck intending to check out the first track but sat spellbound through all of it. He’d finally bridged the slightly avant garde post-punk and mainstream; this was obviously it, he was about to hit the big time. If only.

Zip Style Method

Too many highlights for me, but ‘The Ghost of Al Capone ‘ (“the guardian angels are working for me”), ‘Night People’ and ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ are today’s stand out tracks. The list would probably be different tomorrow.

Again on CBS, Catalogue number EPC85667. Nothing untoward in the grooves or matrix numbers, the tracks are:

Side 1

  • Midnight Shift
  • New Assassin
  • Face Behind the Scream
  • I Travel in Biscuits
  • The Day the World Stood Still
  • Heart Disease Called Love

Side 2

  • Ghost of Al Capone
  • Ninety Degrees in My Shades
  • The Day My Pad Went Mad
  • I Wanna Be Yours
  • Drive She Said
  • Night People

Also available on CD which I can’t find at the moment, curse my failed filing system. Much rooting however leads me to the expanded CD, catalogue number 8697041782, with four additional Radio 1 live versions of tracks;

  • Midnight Shift
  • The Day My Pad Went Mad
  • Night People
  • TheNew Assassin

If memory servers I bought the other albums on CD and spent some time waiting for this one, and similarly expanded versions of Disguise In Love and Snap, Crackle & Bop were released at the same time. A visit to HMV is called for to confirm.

And this brings us to … <dramatic pause> … the acetate. Oh joy.

Again smelling fantastic in a Tape 1 studio sleeve with hand-written titles dating it 14th April 1982. The rear is again hand-written with all the tracks and timings, totalling 24′ 53″ for side 1 and 20′ 49″ for side 2. If the CD ever shows up I’ll compare.

Tucked away inside is a type-written ‘label copy’ with hand-written notes correcting the timings and credits. There’s also  page torn from a notebook stating that Side 1 is ‘fine’ but instructing that the gaps be closed on side 2 and that ‘more top’ is needed on ’3′. This is signed ‘Laurence’, presumably the credited mixer Laurence Diana. The creation process in action.
